Enjoying Irrationality

I chanced upon this lecture given by Rory Sutherland at The Welcome conference and really enjoyed it thoroughly. I think it gives a lot of inspiration on what it means to go beyond the frontier when we’ve reached the limits of where rational optimisation has brought us – be it business or policymaking.

I also think he was right to first highlight that such thinking works better within certain domains (eg. marketing, hospitality, maybe F&B services). It could work well for certain aspects of policymaking, too. And I think it holds some lessons for the Singapore public service to certain extent.

It’s about 45 minutes long but I’m sure you’d find it a delight too.
